Whit Watkins

Whit with Marin

Fascinated with horses and riding since age three, Whit began by climbing up to ride any four-legged animal that would accept her attentions.  This enthusiasm led her into foxhunting and riding and showing hunters and jumpers, from the sixth grade through college.

While pursuing post-graduate studies in Colorado, Whit happened on a dressage show, and changed the direction of her riding goals.  With support and guidance from international riders and trainers including longtime friend and mentor Hilda Gurney, as well as Conrad Schumacher, Major Anders Lindgren, Christine Stuckelburger, Kyra Kyrklund, Hannes Mueller, Klaus Balkenhol, and Heike Kemmer, Whit continues refining her riding, teaching, and training skills. Since successfully competing her homebred Holsteiner gelding, Chado, for several years at the Grand Prix, Whit has coached riders and trained several more horses into the FEI levels.

Whit began teaching and coaching in 1973, and has coached riders and trained several more horses into the FEI levels. In 1998, she established Sunrise Stable, a new facility for training and instruction located on State Highway 118, 8.5 miles north of Fort Davis, TX.
