Course Description:
This course will focus on the theory and practice of teaching writing in college. We will begin from the premise that as teachers of writing, we ourselves are also developing writers. We will move from that opening stance to look at the development of the field of Composition Studies over the last 30 years, focusing on seminal articles representing the ongoing conversation of scholars who have contributed to and are continuing to contribute to creating and refining a discipline. We will foreground always your own development as scholars and professional colleagues preparing to join those conversations.
We will be working with the Apprentice Program, English 5367, here at TTU. In this program, MA students who have never taught before are paired with an experienced teacher (a mentor) who they observe and meet with once a week. We'll be listening in on their discussions, and interacting with them from time to time. In addition, we will be working with a group of graduate students at Ball State University. At BSU, the students cover the material that we cover in two separate courses--English 5360 and English 5367--in a single course( English 610: Teaching College English, which is augmented by Teacher Preparation, or tprep. Check out their pages: http://www.bsu.edu/classes/papper2/610/index.html).
