Welcome to Mary Jane Hursts web page. Mary Jane Hurst is Professor of English and Faculty Assistant to the President at Texas Tech University, where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in linguistics and literature. She has received the Faculty Distinguished Leadership Award, the President’s Excellence in Teaching Award, and other honors. Most of Dr. Hurst’s research centers on language in literature, but she has also published on additional topics related to linguistics, literature, medicine in literature, and various professional issues. Dr. Hurst chaired the efforts that resulted in Texas Tech University earning the right to shelter a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa (see www.depts.ttu.edu/phibetakappa and link at left), and she created and developed the Presidential Lecture and Performance Series at Texas Tech University (see www.presidentialseries.ttu.edu). Mary Jane Hurst participates in a number of professional organizations and is actively involved in her community. She serves, for example, on the Board of Directors for Texas Women in Higher Education, an affiliate of the American Council on Education. She previously served as Executive Director of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest and as an Executive Board member for the South Central Modern Language Association.
