Page Layout.

All papers should be

  • typed or word-processed
  • double-spaced,
  • and use one-inch margins all around.

Headings.

Do not use a title page!

On the first page of your text, place a heading in the upper-right hand corner according to the following model.

Your Name

English [course number]

Dr. Hawkins

[Date]

On second and all subsequent pages, type your last name and page number in the upper-right hand corner:

Last Name #

Titles.

Titles should indicate the text you are discussing as well as your approach to that text: "Disguise in She stoops to Conquer" or "'I see thee not': visual images in Childe Harold III."

Typeface.

Use a standard font like Times New Roman 11, Times 12, Palatino 12, etc.

Presentation.

Place papers in a letter-size manila file folder. Include all drafts, peer evaluations, and prewriting. Use reverse chronological order, place the final version on top, followed by the most recent draft, etc.

Formatting Source Materials

Cite all sources using MLA formats. This includes material from the text you are examining.

At its most basic, MLA requires that you offer that author's last name and a page number within parentheses at the end of a sentence: (Smith 42).

Remember that MLA is a sentence-by-sentence citation format, so every sentence that contains material from a source should be documented by a parenthetical citation.

If you need to review MLA formats, the Writing Center has a number of books that can help you.

Works Cited.

Each paper should also include a Works Cited list. This page lists full bibliographic citations (in MLA format) of all works referred to in the body of the text.
