Participation Assessment
You are a valued member of an intellectual community. In that role, you will participate actively in class discussions, considering thoughtfully the comments of your fellow-classmates and articulating clearly your agreements and objections. In that community, we treat each other as colleagues, offering respect for both agreement and dissent.
Your questions of the instructor and of your colleagues, your answers to questions posed to you by your colleagues and the teacher, your contributions to the class discussion--all should indicate that you have read the material assigned and completed all related exercises prior to class.
The grading scale for participation runs from 0-100.
My Expectations of You.
- You will engage thoughtfully and critically in the questions and problems that the texts and exercises pose
- You will come to class having considered the comments you would like to make about the readings
- You will come to class having devoted sufficient time and effort in completing weekly research assignments
- You will prepare all assignments according to the descriptions, resources, and rubrics provided on the website
- You will initiate discussion, respond to queries from students and the instructor, as well as pose questions
- You will be prepared to respond to questions and critiques of your ideas, with intelligence and civility
- You will treat your classmates and the instructor with respect and courtesy
Assessment of Participation
For every class session, you will earn a participation score based on the quality of your class participation during that session:
- 4: you actively and productively shaped class discussion by introducing a topic or issue pertinent to the course; you responded ethically and responsibly to your fellow students as well as to the instructor.
- 3: you offered, unsolicited, a response to a question; you volunteered a question or an observation
- 2: you exhibited explicit, attentive listening; you answered a question appropriately when called upon
- 1: you were obviously unprepared; unable to answer a question when called upon; obviously inattentive
Your Expectations of Me.
- I will be an active scholar in the field of bibliography, book history, and / or textual criticism
- I will encourage intellectual debate in an atmosphere of collegiality.
- I will encourage, even challenge, you to produce your best work.
- I will not let you be satisfied with facile responses or easy answers to the questions that the texts pose.
- I will assess all graded assignments according to the rubrics provided on my website
- I will begin and end class promptly.
