English 4365 / Hypermedia Authoring / Fall 2000 /
Joyce Carter
This course will investigate the theory and practice of hypermedia authoring in technical communication. Its structure will model the processes outlined in the hypermedia literature for creating effective applications. We will begin with an overview of hypermedia concepts and research, and with an overview of Authorware Academic--our development environment for the course. We will then plan, design, and evaluate our own hypermedia applications, following "best practices" in the field.
Although the course assumes no prior hypermedia experience, you are expected to (1) learn Authorware Academic, (2) learn the associated software and hardware needed to develop hypermedia content, (3) learn to use the Internet as a resource for hypermedia authoring, (4) understand the instructional design and human factors issues involved in hypermedia authoring, (5) understand the cultural, legal, and ethical issues associated with hypermedia authoring, (6) understand and implement a project-oriented approach to multimedia development, and (7) understand and articulate the differences between different approaches and platforms for producing applications.
