Conference2007/Student Posters/2

May, 2004 At the 2004 conference in Baltimiore, MD, I was asked by Sandi Harner, VP for Academic Affairs, if I would take on the task of forming the first Academic Community under the auspices of the transformation initiative underway in STC. The transformation was intended to allow for new groups to form that were not necessarily geographical, and the society leaders encouraged groups to form that were more modeled on the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in the society, rather than on geographically oriented groups (such as chapters). I accepted.
Summer, 2004 During the Summer of 2004, proposed two panels composed of 15 persons who worked in academic environments (one of them didn't) for the 2005 conference in Seattle. The following files contain the proposals.

January, 2005 I did a survey of academics based on the database of academic programs on the STC website.  I sent the survey to 202 persons and received 127 usable surveys. The survey was intended to determine the attitudes of academics toward STC. The following document contains a report of that survey.

May, 2005 The results of the two panels indicated a further willingness to establish an academic community to foster the needs of this group within STC. The two files below contain an outline of the results of our discussions in the areas of:  perspectives of the panelists, ways STC can add value to the academic community, the boundaries of the community, ways the community could provide a visible presence within STC, and ways the community could be grown and strengthened.

June, 2005 I wrote the preliminary proposal for the actual Academic Community, following the STC guidelines for starting a SIG.  This proposal is underway as of June 15, 2005.
